Discuss The Role of Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife In The Novel Of Mice And Men Essay
In this novel, Curleyââ¬â¢s Wifeââ¬â¢s main function or purpose is her representation of one type of female in that time of American history. She seems to be the sort of person who is well calculated in her actions. She likes to make herself attractive by using make-up, when she wears shoes with red ââ¬Å"Ostrich Feathersâ⬠she doesnââ¬â¢t need to wear them on a dust ranch, but she does. She dreams of being a movie or ââ¬Å"Talkieâ⬠star, she tells Lennie this, in a rare show of confidence. She is not a stereotype but I think that her character is quite predictable. In the video adaptation she seems to be friendly because of her appearance and the way in which she says words. When she doesnââ¬â¢t want to be noticed, her physical presence is less noticed. She is described as ââ¬Å"brittleâ⬠this could mean that she is fragile. The word fragile is usually associated with small and easily broken things. The word ââ¬Å"brittleâ⬠could also be describing her physical state of mind. She could seem strong but really could collapse or break down when even slightly touched, or in her case, if she is rejected or insulted. But when she talks she has a dominant charisma, which demands attention. For example, whenever she walks into a room, the men always stop talking to listen to what she has to say. This could be from fear of punishment if they do not agree with her or offend her. It could also be because of the reputation as ââ¬Å"Jailbaitâ⬠which she has, or how she has ââ¬Å"the eyeâ⬠. Because of these two abilities, she can sneak around, trying to overhear anything incriminating which she could use to blackmail someone. An example of this is when she sneaks into the stable when Lennie, Candy and Crooks are there, and she listens to them. Throughout the whole novel she does not have name of her own, which she is called by. She is only referred to as Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife. This could suggest that she is the property of Curley. Or it could also back up the fact that she is like a ghost, because a ghost has no real identity. She could act mean, or deviously because she wants to make herself noticed more. She tells Lennie ââ¬Å"I get awful lonelyâ⬠. This suggests that she wants someone to talk to her, or whom she can talk to. She is only described by people, with sentences like ââ¬Å"She got the eyeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"a Tartâ⬠. After reading the part of the novel when she is in the barn with Lennie, the reader is emoted to sympathise with Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife. This could make the reader feel sorry for her, but then there would be a conflict of emotions when you realise that She has wrecked Candyââ¬â¢s dreams as well as passed a death sentence on Lennie. All of this could overshadow the fact that Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife has just died. But when you her confession to Lennie, you find that this is her only recourse in her search for attention. She tries to make herself look attractive to get more attention, but she is called a ââ¬Å"Tartâ⬠. The fact that she is like a bad luck omen could enforce her image as ââ¬Å"Jail-baitâ⬠. She is like a jinx for anyone who she tries to become close to. She says that she could get crooks hung and she caused Curley and slim to fight. She also indirectly caused Lennieââ¬â¢s death. Not intentionally, but she does. This could be a way of making the reader sympathise with her case, because Candy is angry at her for dying, and he doesnââ¬â¢t stop to think that she is dead. Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife is the only woman who is mentioned on the ranch, so the men could think of her as pretty or appealing because they do not come into contact with any other women. This could encourage or strengthen her attitude. She thought that she could be a movie star and could still think that. This could be another factor that encourages her self-superiority complex. But she knows that. Because, she has no name she could be owned by Curley, this could explain her actions. It could be her way of expressing her anger. She is angry because, when she signed her marriage certificate, She didnââ¬â¢t lose her individuality, but something worse, her identity.

Laws of Life
People are afraid of death but I think life itââ¬â¢s self is so much scarier because you do not know what life will bring you and sometimes it will not be easy. You see I am not really sure what I want to do with my life and it scares me. It scares me that I might mess up my whole life because I do not know what I want to do but I do know one thing I want to do in my life. The only thing I do know is that I want to be a great person. Loyal, kind, and adventurous, thatââ¬â¢s what I want to be and know for when I am gone. Loyalty gives you something to stand for, something to fight for. Being loyal is sticking with your words and promises. I try my best to be loyal, when my friends tell me secrets I keep them, when something happens in the family that other people should not know I do not tell them. Also, being loyal shows that you care about something and you want to keep its trust. Not telling someoneââ¬â¢s secrets is not the only way to be loyal; you can be loyal to your country by supporting it. The most important way to be loyal is to be loyal to god by showing that you are very grateful for what he has given you. ââ¬Å"Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you ââ¬â not because they are nice, but because you areâ⬠This saying showed me that just because people are mean to you does not mean you should be mean back. Being kind shows that you have generosity and courage. Generosity is by spending time, money, or labor, for others, without being rewarded in return, but you do get rewarded with the feeling of happiness that you did something for the ones in need. Courage is when your go out on the limb for someone else and their might be risks. For example, your friends are being mean and calling a kid names and you stick up for them; even with the risk of losing your friends because you know youââ¬â¢re doing the right thing. Which makes being kind is a great quality to have. There are so many doors to be opened, and I'm not afraid to look behind them. â⬠This saying showed me that I want to be someone who embraces life; who wants to be on a long journey but has no particular plan or destination in mind. An adventurous woman, open to the concept of living life in the moment. I want to try new things and face my fears; if there is an opportunity to climb a mountain, or to go sky diving, or some adventurous activity, I will always be happy to do it. I always want to be known for this because I want to be adventurous, spontaneous and crazy. Loyal, kind and adventurous are three qualityââ¬â¢s that define me. If I am brought up in a conversation, I hope their saying that I am nice or trust worthy. Loyal is being trust worthy, kind is being generous, and adventurous is being open. These three qualities are different but they are all great to have and be known for. I will always try my best to be the greatest person that I can be in my lifetime.

The Change in Male and Female Roles Before & Today Essay
The Change in Male and Female Roles Before & Today - Essay Example Speaking of social expectations for both, males are expected to provide for the family or pay for dates at all times while females are to manage the children, the household, and provide emotional support (Jaffari, TTS Holistic Counselor Mehdi, n.d.) Looking at the male and females roles in relationships today in contrast to what I have mentioned above, there has been a lot of reversal of roles. Females today are not secluded to giving signals when showing interest in a guy. Being direct and honest about the feeling, verbally or inaction is already welcome. When it comes to courtship, males are not the only ones who does the pursuing. There are a lot of aggressive girls today who will do everything to get what she wants, and taking a guy out for dates have started to be a common thing. When it comes to male and female responsibilities, males are not the only ones expected to bring in food in the table. Instead, women today are more empowered to take on a job and a journey towards self-actualization that does not stop when she finally gets married.

Whether the Code of Ethics is an Effective Way of Effective Media Essay
Whether the Code of Ethics is an Effective Way of Effective Media Practice - Essay Example The emergence of developed techno-economic paradigm inevitably increases greater attention of the organisations or the agencies in order to revitalise their overall economic performance. According to the recent practices of the media and communication organisations it has been recognised that the codes of media related practices have drawn major interest towards increasing attention on a particular media enquiry, which has transformational influence on the overall communication and media industry (Christians, 2009). Moreover, the codes of practices also have been recognised to draw attention about any required changes in the media and communication policies in order to contribute to a transformational economy. However, ethics or the codes of media practices in Australia has also been recognised to bring major hurdles for the countryââ¬â¢s media and communication industry in terms of substantially improving the media performance of the organisations (Media Entertainment & Arts Alli ance, 2013). Few of the key roles played by the ethics/codes of media practices have been critically described in the following sections. According to the current media and communication of Australia, the codes of ethics has long been witnessed to play a pivotal role not only to increase community awareness, but it also has major contribution on the transformational economic growth of the nation. The code of ethics of the nation has also been recognised in securing best practices of the media and communication organisations along with their wide range of practices. The codes of ethics in Australian media industry possess relatively simple and clearly identifiable factors that determine to improve efficiency of the organisations. The code of ethics of the country relies basically on four major factors, including honesty, fairness, independence and respect for the rights and liberties of others (Australian Press Council, 2014). In the context of honesty, conserving the way of honestly reporting and interpreting essential facts has been identified as a set of common and relatively best practices in the Australian ethical codes of media practices. In order to meet the requirement of honesty in response to the ethical codes, the process of striving accuracy along with fairness and revelation of each essential fact can be dully accepted towards securing ethical media practices across the nation (Australian Press Council, 2014).Ã

Poverty in the U.S Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Poverty in the U.S - Research Paper Example First of all, let us understand how poverty has risen in the U.S. and how it affects the poor. Seccombe (384-393) asserts that poverty can be defined as having an inadequate income that can make a family stay ââ¬Å"below the poverty lineâ⬠. In the United States, poverty is concretely defined in dollar figures by the Social Security Administration. By determining the amount of money needed to survive on food, and then multiplying that number by three, the Social Security Administration sets the poverty line. For example, if the SSA decided that the amount of money needed to sustain a survivable diet during a year was $4,000, then it would set the poverty line at $12,000. Thus, any individuals whose income was less than this amount for a year would be considered to be living in poverty. According to Flik and Praag (311-330), poverty line is essential for determining who receives welfare benefits in U.S. Poverty does not seem to be an evenly distributed social problem. In America, African Americans and Latinos have, by far, the largest poverty rate. Many factors such as poor wages for women and the increase of single-woman parented families have caused an increase in the percentage of women among the poor. elderly, however, fill a much smaller percentage as they receive benefits as social security. Macionis (216) concluded that in 2003, the government classified 12.5 percent of the U.S. population as poor, which makes 35.9 million of men, women and children. Research suggests that the home environment adds to poverty because most homes that look in disrepair mean that the family living inside might not have the income to fix things. When a family is in the poverty zone they feel bad and inadequate, which can make them unwilling to ask for help (Brooks-Gunn & Duncan). This can be harmful to children because they do not have a say when the adults need help. Poverty is an unkind and brutal way for children to live. It manifests in physical, emotional and social ways. Impoverished children have social, emotional and behavioral problems due to poor health and serious mental health problems stemming from the persistent poverty level in which they live. Serious health problems come with poverty, such as preventable diseases like Influenza, Measles, malnutrition and AIDS due to lack of proper health care. Public assistance offered in most states does not cover all that the poor children need to live a normal lifestyle. Now, we describe how poverty is beneficial for the rich of the society despite its negative outcomes related to the poor. According to the sociologist, Herbert Gans (20-24), occupations and professions like criminology, social work, journalism, and public health exist with the help of existence of poverty. Gans has listed manifold functions of poverty that are beneficial to the rich of the society. The dirty work in the society gets done with the help of the poor who work at low wages and indecent salaries. The poor help in subs idizing the economy because they pay taxes, buy cheap products and go for low-cost services that are just ignored by the wealthy community. The existence of poverty acts as a guarantee for the rich peopleââ¬â¢s status, because if there would be no poor, there would be no identification left for the rich. The rich people give charity to the poor

The Debate Between Darwinism and Creationism Essay
The Debate Between Darwinism and Creationism - Essay Example Twenty years after the publication of On the Origin of Species, a crusade against this heretical doctrine came forward by the name of Creationism. Liberal churchmen and evangelical Christians had started embracing the evolution theory laid down by Darwin and his supporters. The creationists took upon themselves the task of outlawing the doctrines of evolution in the 1920s. Presently, they continue with this battle in the name of religion. William Jennings Bryan, a Presbyterian layman, made a huge claim about eliminating Darwinism from its roots in public schools. This strengthened the purpose of other creationists and the success encouraged them to continue with their efforts. Bryan was extremely disappointed to learn that Darwinism was used as a tool by the German military to cause war. Both democracy and Christianity were deeply affected by this havoc. He saw the whole of United States collapsing in this disbelief and the spread of the disease was far more rapid than he could imagi ne. He was ââ¬Å"convinced that the teaching of Evolution as a fact instead of a theory caused the students to lose faith in the Bible, first, an in the story of creation, and later in other doctrines, which underlie the Christian religionâ⬠. In 1922, the same year in which Bryan started his crusade against the scientists who were the main cause; Will the I am Bell Riley stated the most important reason for the fundamentalists to oppose the scientific notions of evolution as being just a hypothesis and not a science.
